vis a vis (2010)

When Marcos Covelo start to work in his paintings he did not make any type of previous sketch, nor study of shapes or color. he likes that the canvas becomes a stage for constant experimentation. In a way, it is about dispensing with the technical procedure that provides a predetermined work route due to the freshness that the “act of the moment” grants. There are many corrections throughout a painting, he also tends to make drastic decisions such as sacrificing possible elements that are finished if they compromise the final composition. And so on until the work is determined as finished.

The stains or masses of color as spilled paint connote different readings, depending on whether it is a painting, sculpture or installation.

For example, on canvas they are abstract elements that serve as communicating channels between different forms or elements. It resembles a melody, with different rhythms, silences, textures or tonalities in the composition. At the same time the masses of color, especially those that are created by accident due to the play between gravity and the load on the brush, develop a kind of rhizome of “hyperconnectivity” between elements, which he thinks is very close to the approach of global network connection. This overexposure of information or continuous bombardment of images to which the mass media subject us is directly related to that abstract amalgamation of colors that makes up his paintings. Nothing is understood, there is too much noise and it is difficult for us to discern what information is important and what is not.
